Both Carmel and adjoining Monterey offer some good models for livable cities and towns. Thanks to an active citizenry Carmel has maintained its identity and human scale in harmony with nature by protecting its pine forest canopy, naturally traffic calmed streets and emphasis on natural building materials. Its policy of limiting size of new development, including new hotels, has persisted through successive city administrations. Carmel is close to the Big Sur Coast and Point Lobos, the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island.
Monterey has preserved its historic adobes, created attractive new mixed use infill buildings downtown, developed a thriving farmers' market on its main street, and hosts many festivals including a World Music Festival. Monterey also offers well known attractions such as Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf and a nationally renowned aquarium. The weather in early December in the Monterey Bay area is usually very pleasant, sunny and mild.
Monterey is easily reached by air via San Francisco or Los Angeles, or by car from San Francisco (2 hours) or San Jose (1½ hours).
A block of rooms has been reserved at the historic La Playa Hotel, with its beautifully landscaped gardens and good conference facilities close to Carmel Beach.
